Now celebrating its 18th year, the prestigious competition—originally established as the Asia Young Designer Awards—returns as the AYDA Awards 2026 under the compelling banner: “Converge: Embracing Hyperlocal.”

The 2026 theme addresses a pivotal evolution in international design philosophy. As globalization continues to interlink modern society, "Converge" represents the intersection where diverse cultures, cutting-edge technologies, and bold concepts meet. Concurrently, "Embracing Hyperlocal" mandates that these forward-thinking innovations remain deeply anchored in the unique identities and specific needs of local communities.
In rapidly developing countries like the Philippines, this approach is particularly vital. Hyperlocal design challenges emerging professionals to look beyond standardized modern developments. Instead, they are encouraged to draw inspiration from indigenous materials, time-honored construction methods, and rich cultural narratives.
Whether developing adaptive reuse strategies for historical structures in Metro Manila or drafting community-first housing concepts for climate-vulnerable regions, the competition champions spaces that are both exceptionally functional and culturally resonant. Rather than allowing globalization to dilute local identity, AYDA 2026 uses global connectivity as a tool to amplify regional heritage. This framework prepares young creatives to tackle urgent global issues, including urban density, climate resilience, and cultural preservation.

Since its inception by Nippon Paint in 2008, AYDA has evolved into a powerhouse for academic and professional growth. The competition has amassed over 50,000 entries spanning more than 1,300 universities and colleges across 20 distinct geographical locations.

Prize Structure and Global Exposure
The Ultimate Reward: The Harvard Prize
- The highest international honors—the AYDA Designer of the Year titles for both the Architecture and Interior Design tracks—will receive the celebrated Harvard Prize. This flagship reward features a fully funded, three-week enrollment in the Design Discovery Program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) in the United States.
Valued at up to USD 10,000, this comprehensive scholarship takes care of:
- Full program tuition
- Round-trip airfare
- Comfortable accommodations
- Full visa processing support
Additionally, the mentors guiding the victorious international students will receive exclusive access to Harvard GSD’s Virtual Design Discovery Program (DDV).
