"We want to exhibit items that are new to the eye as we open The Casa's doors for our first auction of this year. We keep bringing objects with fascinating histories. But we also humorously spotlight some modern works for this Primero Auction. According to Angelique Lhuillier, director of Casa de Memoria, "This Casa Primero will undoubtedly excite the interest of many collectors, both seasoned and fresh.

Casa de Memoria Online Auction Primero 2023 Lot 041
Lot 041 - Orientalist Male Holding a Tray of Fruits, After Gabriel Morcillo Raya 85 x 95 cm. Signed “E. Rada” in the lower right corner. Oil on canvas, circa 20th to 21st century Spain. The back reveals sketches, likely of the same subject. Starts at PHP 110,000.00

According to Camille Lhuillier-Albani, General Manager of Casa de Memoria, "Our cover showcasing Lot 041 actually best captures the leitmotif of this auction. "This Orientalist oil painting interestingly represents numerous contrasts," she continues. On the one hand, you have a still life and a human subject all in one. On the other hand, a contemporary cityscape is suggested behind this archaic male figure. Also, the fact that this Lot was probably created by a young artist carrying on the heritage of a Spanish contemporary master proves that art is always a vehicle for a time, transmitting knowledge from the past to those who would cherish and acquire these works today.

"People frequently claim that our auctions specialize in historical lots. Yet, the truth is that even if your piece doesn't yet have a history associated with it, we may still assist you in locating any missing histories. Also, we encourage collectors to value these items more by recounting their histories. Also, our auctions assist in helping these items find new homes, says Angelique.

The Palacio de Memoria, a pre-war beachfront mansion that survived Manila's carpet bombing and has been awarded the 2020 National Council for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Filipino Heritage Awards for adaptive reuse, is home to Casa de Memoria's Preview. Hence, a trip to the Palace constitutes a historical tour in and of itself.
