People come to TikTok to be imaginative, find community, and have fun. Being truthful is respected by our culture, and we take the task of helping fight inauthentic, deceptive, or fake content to heart.

We delete disinformation as we find it and work with fact-checkers at Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Lead Stories to help us judge the news's authenticity. If fact checks prove material to be incorrect, we'll delete the video from our website.

Often fact checks are inconclusive, or content cannot be verified, particularly during unfolding events. In these circumstances, a video can become unavailable for recommendation into anyone's For You feed to minimize the dissemination of potentially deceptive content. Today, we're bringing it a move further to warn fans when we identify a video of unsubstantiated material in an attempt to minimize distribution.

Here's how it works: First, an audience can see a banner on a video if the material has been checked but cannot be conclusively confirmed.

The video's producer will also be told that their video was flagged as unsubstantiated material.

When a viewer wants to post the flagged footage, they’ll see a prompt telling them that the video has been flagged as unverified content. This additional step includes a delay for people to consider their next move before they want to "cancel" or "share anyway."

This functionality was designed to help consumers be aware of what they post. Initially rolled out in the US and Canada and internationally over the next few months, it is now open to all PH apps starting March 8, 2020.
