According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, almost 95 percent of the world’s oceans remain unexplored by humans. With this, it is not surprising that the marine world continues to be a source and a topic of folklore and fantasy stories.

Perhaps the most famous of these stories often involved a mermaid, an example is Hans Christian Andersen’s well-known work of fiction, The Little Mermaid. In British folklore, mermaids are often linked to doomed ships and stormy seas, the reason why seafarers in the past avoided sailing in areas where mermaids are believed to be living.

While not fearsome-looking, mermaids might have conjured fear from sailors because of their association with another mythical beast, the siren. In Homer’s The Odyssey, sirens were winged women that sang hypnotic songs to lure sailors to their deaths. Over time, these attributes were passed down to mermaids, becoming part of their threat as much as their charm.

Stories about mermaids are what the American drama series entitled Siren banks on. In the show, mermaids are faced with fear and desire when they are confronted with chaos in the fictional coastal town of Bristol Cove. ‘Siren’ airs every Monday at 9:45 PM exclusively on Blue Ant Entertainment.
